Broke on first use
Got this scratching post today; put it together tonight. Cats were excited -- they knew what is was, since I have other scratching posts and a cat tree. As soon as I set it down, my 12-pound cat jumped on the top perch, and the post bent in half! It turns out the sisal is wrapped around a cardboard tube that is wound on the bias from a cardboard strip, not formed with a single seam, so the tube split in the middle at the seam, like the package of frozen dinner rolls. Thank God for Amazon's easy return policy!!! This post appeared to be exactly what I was looking for, but will not order another like this. Guess I'll have to keep looking.
Don't waste your money
For $26.99, I expected a better quality item. I would hold out for a better quality scratching post.
Pros: Great height
The tube is cardboard, but so far, my 15 pound cat is sitting on top without damage to the post.
When only sharpening their claws, it has not tipped over.
It is actual sisal rope.
Cons: The tube is cardboard.
The top never tightens up, it just keeps spinning.
The bottom does not weigh enough. Within the first 48 hours, my cat was on top, and the entire post fell over, throwing my cat into the wall.
So far, so good
At first my cat prefered her beaten up scratching post and I had to coax her to use this one, but now she chooses to use it, although she won't ever sit on the platform. She's a 12 lb cat and a little clumsy. The platform is not sturdy enough. She's also used to her old post that had a thicker carpeted bottom and she like to grab onto the post and fling herself around. The bottom on this one has a plush covering, which is soft, but it doesn't provide any cushion for her. Overall this is a good scratching post. It does its job and it's nice that it's a little taller so my cat can stretch as she scratches. One negative is that the rope isn't wound as tightly nor secured in place like the old post so I have a feeling this one may fall apart quicker.
